BRASIL!
The kids have been getting up at 5:00 AM over the last few weeks to track the progress of their favorite team, Brazil. On Sunday they won the World Cup! Now life is returning to normal, which is fine by me. I hope it is a long time before I again hear the word "GOOOOOOOOOAL!"

Roberto is doing very well here at the Hogar. He is happy, quiet, and sleeps a lot. As you can see he's also fat, which is quite a change from when we first received him. He likes his food. Everyone here dotes on him, even the other kids. He gets outside a good bit, strapped to the back of Elisa or Magdalena with a colorful blanket. He never complains. What a great baby.

Pluto

The puppy Pluto is still with us, contrary to expectations. He has recovered from his parasites and is now eating. He's still skinny as a rail and moves slow. He's had such a hard life already that he has the permanent drooped head and tucked tail of a veteran Guatemalan dog. He's not exactly frisky.

At least he doesn't have to dodge rocks. The other day I saw a local woman throwing baseball-sized rocks at a cowering dog with great force and accuracy. I asked bystanders whose dog she was stoning. They answered, "Hers!"

We've had a fair plague of insects around here lately. It's the rainy season so some should be expected, but it has been unusually buggy even so. Swarms of flies fill the indoor areas, especially at mealtime. Everything must be kept covered until ready to eat. Fly tape is used extensively, but at a height where I occasionally get caught as well. At night we have huge moths. Moths and butterflies go by the same word down here, as do rats and mice, and pigeons and doves. Some of these moths are bigger than butterflies, and could probably fare well in the "bat" category for that matter.

The collection so far

Then there are the beetles. Great horned beetles, shiny green beetles, multi-colored metallic beetles reminiscent of scarabs. Some are large enough to make a nice hood ornament. At night they buzz around in haphazard flight, and are large slow-moving targets that are easy to catch. Once caught they are brought to Benjamin, who injects them with a preservative and lines them up on a piece of cardboard in the office. I'm pretty sure we have the largest private collection of beetles in Lemoa.

Elisa has involved the kids in gardening down in the orchard. Some of the many apple trees have been removed and in their place are now rows of carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, onions and more. We also now have two rabbits and a small pig down there. Chickens are said to be on the way. So goes the farm.

Last week I borrowed an LCD projector from Phil, the American dentist from Salud y Paz. Coupled with the DVD player on my laptop and boombox, we had a portable movie theater! I played movies every night for a week. The favorites were "Toy Story" and "Spy Kids".
