We've had a fair plague of insects around here lately.
It's the rainy season so some should be expected, but
it has been unusually buggy even so. Swarms of flies
fill the indoor areas, especially at mealtime. Everything
must be kept covered until ready to eat. Fly tape is
used extensively, but at a height where I occasionally
get caught as well. At night we have huge moths. Moths
and butterflies go by the same word down here, as do
rats and mice, and pigeons and doves. Some of these
moths are bigger than butterflies, and could probably
fare well in the "bat" category for that matter.
Then there are the beetles. Great horned beetles, shiny
green beetles, multi-colored metallic beetles reminiscent
of scarabs. Some are large enough to make a nice hood
ornament. At night they buzz around in haphazard flight,
and are large slow-moving targets that are easy to catch.
Once caught they are brought to Benjamin, who injects
them with a preservative and lines them up on a piece
of cardboard in the office. I'm pretty sure we have
the largest private collection of beetles in Lemoa.
