Viajando a Lemoa
Travelling to Lemoa
on a rural taxi
Sick. Very sick. High temperature with all the trimmings. It got so bad on Saturday that I finally decided to break out my secret weapon: Cipro. Guaranteed to wipe out any unauthorized organisms lurking in your body, and maybe even a few innocent bystanders. Powerful stuff, and it really works. After just the first course I was feeling much better.

On Sunday we went to the Iglesia Metodista Primitiva. This was the one Sunday in the month that the kids from the Hogar ran the service; the pastor got up only to give the sermon. The children did a wonderful job. A member of the congregation got up to give a prayer of thanks, and I was struck by what she was thankful for: the land, the sun, water, food.

On Monday I went to the site of the new orphanage in Lemoa with Elisa, Benjamin, Federico, and a detachment of niños. We spent the morning excavating the orchard, which had become overgrown with weeds. This was done via machete, which I found quite an effective tool. With a carefully sharpened edge, it can cut a swath through weeds like a hot knife through butter. The kids also use the machetes to peel apples and limes in an alarmingly offhand manner. We picked a few sacks full of apples, which were practically falling off the trees, and a bucketful of fresh limes. The orchard also provides pears, avacados, plums, figs, oranges, and a couple of other indigenous fruits that I'm not sure of.

Black beans and rice again for dinner tonight. I think I'm getting close to my breaking point. I'm beginning to flinch just at the sight of that meal. But the baby of the group, Maria, just tripped by singing out to everyone how wonderful her dinner was. I asked her what it was, as she tends to get special treatment. Indeed it was black beans and rice. She must not have eaten much, though, because later she got Pollo Campero (Guatemala's version of KFC).

I do have to say one thing: Eating a steady bland diet really makes you appreciate foods you previously had little interest in, say, a chocolate-dipped vanilla ice cream bar. I know theory is true because I tested it scientifically on Sunday.

Twice.

Les mando saludos! Espero que se encuentren bien. Estoy bien aqui. Todos las noches hago mi tarea, y estoy muy cansado por estar haciendo tarea. Yo disfruta mucho con mis amigas en el colegio. Estoy estudiando secretaria bilingual. Que Dios les bendiga.

Greetings! I hope you are well. I am well here. Every night I do lots of homework, and am very tired of doing homework. I very much enjoy being with my friends from school. I am studying to be a bilingual secretary. God bless you.
