Haciendo sopa de gallo
Making rooster soup
Things are a bit quieter around here now. I was joking around with Elisa, the person in charge of the day-to-day operations here, that we should eat some of the roosters. The next afternoon we had Rooster Soup. Not bad either.

Federico accompanied this week me for a tour of the main cathedral in town. Figures of the saints were each behind an ornate metal grillwork that Guatemalans are so fond of. Upon closer inpsection, however, it was made of chain link fence, layered with chicken wire. Details were done in rebar. All were painted in silver.

I took my first bath on the patio on Sunday. The procedure is to put on some shorts (to preserve modesty), fill a bucket with water and head out with some soap and shampoo to the center of the patio. A small plastic bowl is used to dispense the water as needed.

It wasn't as bad as I had anticipated, although some of the boys did gather to watch and offer various pointers. A sunny day is essential for this activity. Not only is the air temperature higher, but the water is somewhat warmed by solar energy.

I was in Xela for a few days working on a web page for the National Methodist Church of Guatemala (www.GuatemalaVIM.org), and when I returned I discovered that the kids had cleaned the chimney in my absence. I wasn't too sorry to have missed it, as I knew it would be a rather sooty affair. Black footprints on the patio confirmed this. It was good to have it done, though, as previously smoke had occupied the top third of the dining room when cooking was underway. It was not a problem for most residents, but at my altitude I was right in the thick of it.
